Whether you like it or not, there will come a time, season in your marriage where you’ll feel like you’re fighting alone, with no one on your side. And no matter how much you want to be strong and fight for your marriage to work, things can get really overwhelming and cumbersome. But don’t raise that flag just yet! I know it can feel hopeless but check out the four ways below that can help your marriage especially when your spouse doesn’t seem to be supportive to you anymore.
1. TREAT YOUR SPOUSE THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED.
The most common response we give to our spouses when we don’t like the way they are treating us is “getting back at them”; treating them exactly the way they’re treating us, or even worse! But, don’t treat your spouse the way your spouse treats you!
This may sound easier than actually doing it because we humans naturally want to respond to negativity with negativity but this can only make the problem worse so challenge yourself to go against your instinct and show love and kindness even when it’s not reciprocated.
2. TAKE AN HONEST SELF-ASSESSMENT.
What ways do you think are you hurting your marriage? Are your actions appropriate for the situation?
It’s not easy to look at our own faults and shortcomings but self-assessment is an integral part of the process. This doesn’t mean that your spouse is blameless and that you only need to point out your mistakes; it simply means that you are being responsible, accepting and accountable with your actions.
3. REMEMBER YOUR COMMITMENT.
Getting blamed by our spouse can be painful but it is once again part of the process – having to deal with so many negative emotions. When you are in this situation when all negative things are being dumped on you, remember that you are not the only reason for the issues you and your spouse are facing. Remain focused on finding solutions to your marital issues instead of snapping back at your spouse. Most importantly, remember your commitment to your spouse – the vows you made at the altar.
4. LOOK FORWARD TO A BETTER FUTURE. THINK: THIS TOO SHALL PASS.
The struggles you and your spouse are going through right now will one day become a story. How the story goes is dependent on you and your spouse. Do you want it to be a story of two people who fought for their marriage? Or a story of two people who gave up on it? The two of you must decide which of those two stories becomes true.
