Psychologists say that most people will talk about anything, and I mean anything under the sun, even uncomfortable topics especially in the Philippines setting such as sex before they talk about their money. Have you ever wondered why it’s considered rude to ask about how much your company is paying you?
So why is it so difficult for us to talk about money? Perhaps because money symbolizes different things to different people: love, control, power, security and a lot more.
I’ll say it again, it’s been pointed out that money is one of the main causes why couples grow apart but if you and your spouse work hard at not letting money matters come between the two of you then you can definitely have your happily ever after, financially speaking.
First thing that you as a couple need to work on is communication. Money talk.
Here are three ways to make ‘money talk’ with your spouse effortless.
FIND A NEUTRAL TIME TO TALK
Do not wait until another money problem arises before you open up your concerns to your spouse. The goal here is to provide a calm, accepting and relaxed environment for discussion. Money issues can be a bit intense especially if they’re on the stressful side of the money continuum but setting a neutral time to talk about it can minimize tension.
BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS
Be vulnerable and don’t be afraid to show it to your spouse. Volunteer your feelings, express it as it may encourage your spouse to do the same. If you consider your marriage as top priority then you’ll both need to be willing to negotiate and show parts of yourself you don’t usually let people see.
DISCOVER YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE
If you find it hard getting your spouse to open up to you or communicating things to your spouse, then maybe you are communicating the wrong way. For couples, it is vital to understand how your spouse receives and gives away information, in short, you need to learn his/her communication style. Do this and all money talks should be more comfortable for the two of you.
